About the Artist

Vernon Wooten, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, studied at the Harris School of Art in Nashville, Tennessee, served in the Marine Corps Reserve, and as an illustrator with Army Headquarters Europe in Heidelberg,Germany. His career has covered the advertising and publishing fields as well as fine arts.

He is a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York, The American Artists Professional League, New York, and the National Sculpture Society, New York. His illustrations have appeared in many publications, and his paintings and limited edition prints are widely collected. His oil painting, "Virginia Hunt Country" won first place out of 300 entries in the Colonial Downs competition in 1997.

Vernon was Senior Graphic Book Designer/Foundation Illustrator for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for many years and two of the many books he designed and illustrated were the best selling "The Williamsburg Cookbook" and "Favorite Meals from Williamsburg". First published in 1971, "The Williamsburg Cookbook" is now in its 15th printing and has sold well over a million

 

and a half copies. "Favorite Meals" is in its 9th printing and, when first published in 1982, won the Award of Excellence in design and production in the Southeastern Library Association's annual book competition.

Vernon presently has a studio/gallery in Williamsburg, Virginia and devotes full time to painting and sculpture.
